The BEST nourishing choice for hot chocolate!
So we have made it through the month that lasts forever! YAY! I would say the only good thing about the month of January is that your best option is to cozy in, snuggle up, get a hot drink and enjoy some warmth with your loved ones.
When I was younger, my favorite cold-weather drink was hot chocolate. I would drink it right before bed and almost fall asleep mid-sip! Ahhh, the good stuff…but not really. The hot chocolate of my youth was filled with refined sugar, soy products, corn syrup solids, and artificial flavors. Did I love it? You bet. Did my body love it? I’m going to say that’s a negative. I’ve learned over the years that a large trigger for my anxiety is refined sugar…and I’ve suffered since I was pretty young. So you never know how it’ll affect you!
Now days, I know what I need to avoid and I know there are better, more nourishing options out there! Let’s break down my list of ingredients…
Raw Milk or Full Fat Coconut Milk
We ALWAYS choose raw dairy over pasteurized. When you choose a raw, living food to nourish your body you will reap the benefits. Pasteurized products created within the dairy industry are depleted of the enzymes and probiotics that are necessary for digestion and utilization of all components.
We get our raw milk locally, from the sweetest lady and her well-loved, grassfed cattle. You likely have a source for raw dairy near you! You can search your general area for registered providers at rawmilk.com. I highly recommend visiting the farm and its animals and make sure you agree with the owner’s practices when choosing a raw milk source!
Unfortunately for this mama though, milk is one of my more intense food allergies (hopefully gone by this fall, when I’ll be well into GAPS protocol ❤ ) so I have a dairy-free option for those who prefer to skip the dairy! I make my own or purchase this kind online or at my nearest Whole Foods – I love that they don’t add sugars or gums!
Grassfed Butter – The Real Stuff!
Butter has so many beneficial properties, aside from just being full of good saturated fats. Butter has even been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties! It’s a great, filling addition to any warm drink. Bulletproof coffee, anyone?
Again with the raw!? 😀 YES. There is a large difference between your basic cooking cocoa and raw cacao (kuh-kow). Cocoa is created by roasting cacao beans at high temperatures, therefore eliminating those beneficial living enzymes in the cacao. Raw cacao is high in antioxidants and many other beneficial chemical compounds! I purchase this organic, raw cacao (there’s also a 15% coupon right now!).
Raw Local Honey
My family’s honey comes from our local farmer that we get our pastured meat from. Unfiltered, raw honey constitutes a whole-food product. So for those of you who are concerned about the sugar content, keep that in mind! When a sugar such as raw honey is ingested, we are not only getting the sugar…we’re getting all the nutrients necessary for properly utilizing that sugar. We’re not damaging our guts like we do with refined sugars, and we’re not causing a dangerous spike and fall.
I always recommend going local for honey. Many commercially produced honey products can be adulterated with HFCS! 😦
For a vegan option, feel free to use 100% Maple Syrup! Also a whole food sweetener.
Collagen is a massively beneficial supplement to any food or drink! It is tasteless and blends well, so you can incorporate it into basically anything for a boost in gut health and some non-isolated protein. Amazing for hair, skin, nails, joints, mental health, nerve health, the list goes on…

Real salt (that’s actually what it’s called) is very high in minerals that are so very often lacking from our bodies! We use this brand and love it, but remember a little goes a long way!
Cinnamon has been shown to be very beneficial in regulating blood sugars. Post-partum, I was having horrible blood sugar crashes so I decided to add a hefty spoon of cinnamon to my daily (or twice daily) shakes. It really did help me!
Adds just the perfect cozy warmth to the drink! I love this brand of alcohol-free vanilla.
This is of course optional! I looove marshmallows though, and I prefer to make our own to avoid the yucky ingredients in store-bought. If you’d rather just purchase some, the best I have found are these.
So you’re probably thinking that this sounds like less of a drink and more of a meal. You’d be right! It is very nutrient-dense and filling, and makes the perfect snack!

|HODGEPODGE HOT CACAO|
|Prep Time: 5 Minutes|
|Cook Time: 10 Minutes|
|Total Time: 15 Minutes|
1 13.5oz can full-fat coconut milk or about 2 Cups raw milk
1 6oz can coconut cream or about 1/2 raw cream
1 Tbs grassfed butter
2 Tbs raw powdered cacao
2 Tbs raw local honey
1 scoop grassfed beef collagen peptides
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp alcohol-free vanilla extract
Pinch of finely ground real salt
Add milk, cream and butter to saucepan. Heat enough to feel warmth, but not enough that you have to pull your finger out within ten seconds. Melt butter.
Add powdered cacao, raw honey, collagen, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla. Keep stirring and heating until well incorporated and creamy. Top with marshmallows if desired and enjoy! 🙂
